Copper is a drama television series created by Tom
Fontana and Will Rokos currently being broadcast on BBC America. It is set in 1860s New York City during the American
Civil War and stars Tom Weston-Jones as an Irish immigrant cop who patrols the Five Points neighborhood. Other cast
members include Kyle Schmid, Anastasia Griffith, and Franka Potente.
The series is BBC America's first original
scripted program after previously only airing shows from the United Kingdom and co-productions. Fontana, Rokos, Barry
Levinson and Christina Wayne are executive producers of the series.
The first season of 10 episodes premiered on
August 19, 2012. The series was renewed for a second season of 13 episodes on October 17, 2012.


Dal
premio Oscar per Rain Man Barry Levinson e dal creatore di Oz e I Borgia Tom Fontana, nasce COPPER, la serie ambientata
nel 1860 in una New York City cupa e violenta, molto diversa da quella dei giorni nostri. Attraverso le indagini di
Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones), ex pugile che al ritorno dalla guerra civile viene nominato detective di polizia nel
famigerato quartiere di Five Points, la serie racconta un’epoca in cui il confine tra crimine e giustizia era
molto labile e bastava poco per far sparire le tracce di un omicidio. Ad aiutare Corcoran nella risoluzione delle
indagini e nella ricerca della moglie scomparsa durante la sua assenza in guerra, i due amici ed ex commilitoni Robert
Morehouse (Kyle Schmid) e Matthew Freeman (Ato Essadoh). Quest’ultimo, in qualità di medico, si cimenterà
in rudimentali metodi da polizia scientifica. Nel cast anche Franka Potente (The Bourne Identity) nel ruolo della
prostituta Eva Heissen.

Sullo sfondo di una città dai due volti - la povertà e la criminalità
dilagante di Five Point contrapposte all’ordine e alla ricchezza della Quinta Strada - il detective Kevin
Corcoran lotta per mantenere intatta la propria integrità morale mentre cerca ossessivamente risposte sulla scomparsa
della moglie Ellen e dell’assassinio della figlioletta.

Corcoran, il ricco Morehouse (il cui padre
è uno degli uomini più potenti della città) e l’afroamericano Matthew Freeman, che deve lasciare Five
Points per timore di subire crimini razziali - condividono un segreto che si portano dietro dal campo di battaglia e che
tiene legate le loro vite anche dopo il ritorno dal fronte... Violento e brutale, il mondo di Copper (che significa
“sbirro”) mette in scena il classismo di una società a due velocità e con due diversi metri per il
concetto di “giustizia”.
